— Pablo Neruda
There are poignant moments in the life of each of us,
which unexpectedly profile themselves as a cradle of reflection,
a sense of perspective, a growth in resilience.
They are ‘scars’ that set the stage and can become levers towards a new future.
Heads Up stands for me as a sign of strength, of perseverance, a point of light at the end of a dark tunnel. Heads Up is a way for me to engage with others who know a similar story to Luka's. In particular, Heads Up aims to support research into the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumours in children and, by extension, now in adults.
Thus, grief became the driving force behind - or perhaps even the engine of - a foundation dedicated to further financially enabling scientific research in (paediatric) oncology. All these years, I have noticed that in the midst of this busy, stressful and down-to-earth world, there is also a ‘heart’. Despite the uphill battle, Luka has taught us to go to extremes to achieve our goals.A beautiful attitude for Heads Up to grow and prosper, but also a life lesson for perhaps each and every one of us.
